Buying plants in the mountains is not the same as buying plants anywhere else in North Carolina, and the difference shows up about eighteen months later.
Elevation, drainage, and the way cold settles into a hollow all decide what lives. A shrub that does fine in Charlotte can sit sulking in Weaverville because the ground stays wet through February. Something rated for the right hardiness zone can still fail on an exposed ridge that gets thirty degrees colder than the valley on a clear night. And a plant trucked in from a warmer nursery has never met a mountain winter, which is why it often looks perfect in May and thin by the following spring.
The nurseries here choose for those conditions rather than for a national planogram. Several grow most of what they sell on site, which means the plant has already survived where you are about to put it.
Native selection is worth asking about specifically. It is not only an environmental preference. Natives are adapted to this rainfall and this soil, they need less intervention once established, and they support the pollinators that everything else in your garden depends on. Ask what is genuinely native to Western North Carolina rather than to the eastern United States generally, since the answers are different.
One practical note: several of these operate on seasonal schedules and close between seasons rather than staying open year round. Call or check the website before making the drive, particularly in mid summer and deep winter.

B.B. Barns has been on Sweeten Creek Road in Arden since 1988, and it is two businesses under one roof: a garden center you can browse on a Saturday, and a landscape design and installation company you would hire for a whole yard. That combination is the useful part. You can buy a few perennials, or you can have someone walk your property and tell you why nothing will grow on that bank. They offer garden coaching for people who want to do the work themselves but would rather not learn by killing things first. Painters Greenhouse is a grower rather than a reseller, which is the whole point of the drive. The family has been at it in Old Fort for more than fifty years and grows over ninety percent of what they sell right there on site, across a thousand-plus species. The perennial selection runs past nine hundred varieties, with serious depth in natives and pollinator plants. They are also known for giant Boston ferns, and carry houseplants, succulents, annuals, edibles, trees, and shrubs. Plants grown at elevation in Old Fort have already been through a mountain winter, which is a meaningful head start over stock trucked in from a warmer nursery. Worth knowing before you go: they run on a seasonal schedule and close between seasons rather than staying open year round. Check the website for current dates. Reems Creek Nursery
Reems Creek Nursery is a full garden center in Weaverville, about fifteen minutes north of Asheville, with a plant selection chosen specifically for what survives and thrives in the mountains. That distinction matters more here than most places, and it is the reason people drive out from town rather than buying whatever the big box store trucked in from the Piedmont. The range covers trees and shrubs, perennials and annuals, tropicals, fruit, herbs, roses, bulbs, water plants, seeds, and organic growing supplies. There is a tropical room for houseplants and a certified pollinator habitat garden on site. They stock a genuine native plant selection and take preorders for rare and specialty varieties, which is worth knowing if you are after something a general garden center will not carry.
