Green River Woods

NOTE: Matt and his family are rebuilding the business after it was damaged during Helene (they are based in the River Arts District). But, Asheville has supported them well, and they are hard at work rebuilding and more focused than ever.

​Green River Woods, established in 2008 by Matt Christie, is a distinguished woodworking studio and urban lumber operation located in Asheville’s River Arts District. Specializing in crafting custom furniture from 100% locally salvaged trees, the studio emphasizes environmental sustainability and fine craftsmanship. ​

• Custom Furniture: Green River Woods collaborates with clients nationwide to design and build bespoke pieces. Notable creations include:​

• Walnut dining tables​

• Cherry butcher block islands​

• Live-edge slab trestle tables

• Book-matched beech dining tables with custom bases and waterfall benches​

• Lumber Sales: Offering a vast inventory of kiln-dried and responsibly air-dried slabs, all salvaged and milled locally, providing unique materials for fellow woodworkers and the public.

• Wood Finishes: Produces small-batch, natural wood finishes like Bee Good Wood Oil® and Bee Good Wood Butter™, supporting local beekeepers and promoting sustainable wood care. ​

Personal Story:

Matt Christie’s passion for woodworking is deeply rooted in his upbringing in southern Vermont, where he was influenced by his father’s love for the woods and Thoreau’s philosophy. His family’s connection to Asheville dates back to 1870, with ancestors involved in local businesses and community initiatives. This rich heritage informs Matt’s commitment to sustainable practices and community collaboration in his work at Green River Woods. ​
