The work that I want to be involved with is work of quality; not only quality of architecture, but also quality of construction. I dream of the next generations of family living in our house, a mom or a young boy thinking back to when the house was built, “what it was like back then…what a neat way to do that…they don’t make them like that anymore.” You see, a house is much bigger than all of us. A truly well-built house has a life of its own, and we are lucky to enjoy it for a while. This is my purpose: to make the stage for generations of memories.

ARCA Design

ARCA Design is an architecture practice on Haywood Road in West Asheville. The name is Latin for ark — a container that affords protection and safety — which the firm treats as the starting point for what a building is supposed to do. The work spans homes, schools, commerce centers, public spaces, and places of worship, so this is a practice comfortable moving between residential and institutional scale rather than one that only does custom houses. Homeowners often skip talking to an architect because they assume it is only for ground-up custom builds. It is worth a conversation on any project where the structure changes — removing a bearing wall, adding a second story, or working out whether a steep lot can hold what you want to put on it.
