Distinctive Building and Design, Inc.
Distinctive Building and Design has been building custom homes in Western North Carolina since 1991. Tom Hines founded the company and still runs it, which is worth noting in a trade where thirty-plus years usually means the name outlived the person attached to it.
The firm handles planning, construction, and interior design under one roof, and its portfolio includes work in Waynesville, Maggie Valley, and Asheville.
A builder who does the architectural planning in-house is a different proposition from one who bids on someone else’s drawings. It tends to suit people who know roughly what they want but have not yet had it drawn — and on the steep, awkward lots common around here, that early conversation is where the budget is actually set.

FeaturedVerifiedSolid Rock Builders has been building custom homes out of its office on Merrimon Avenue in Asheville since 2013. Owner Travis Meinch and his team focus on new construction, high-performance homes built to last, and they take on remodeling and commercial work as well. Their standard sits above code. Insulation, foundations, windows, appliances and lighting are all specified past what local and national code requires. A third-party energy rater reviews every home they build to confirm ENERGY STAR certification, so the efficiency claims are checked by someone other than the builder. The team researches and tests new products before using them and keeps revising its building practices. Every house is built as if it were for their own family.

VerifiedOpen nowConard Construction builds new homes, handles remodeling, and does full site work across Western North Carolina from its base in Candler. The family-run company has been building since 1996, and it owns all of its own equipment, from excavators to graders, so site prep and construction stay on one schedule under one crew. Work covers custom homes and new construction, kitchen and bathroom remodels, and home additions, along with the ground work that comes before a build: land clearing, lot preparation, excavation, retaining walls and septic system installation. Associated Builders
Associated Builders is a full-service residential design-build company on Kanuga Road in Hendersonville, run by Cameron Kilpatrick with more than twenty years in the trade. Design-build means the drawings and the construction sit under one contract, which tends to work in the mountains where the site itself drives so much of the design. They will also walk a property with you before you buy it — land selection consulting is part of what they offer, and on a steep Henderson County lot that advice is worth having early rather than late. Alongside custom homes they take on full commercial build-outs. Work spans Western North Carolina.
